Bagpipes have long been associated with the fire service. The great immigrations of the 1800 and 1900’s brought large numbers of Irish, Scots, Welsh, and others of Celtic origin into the United States. Many of these immigrants settled into urban areas. It was these large urban areas that first started professional fire departments, and many of the officers were of Celtic ancestry. These officers brought into the fire service many of the habits and customs from the old countries fire departments, one being the bagpipe. Today the trend continues, probably more so than ever. Countries around the world have bagpipe bands associated with there fire departments. In the United States, the interest in bag piping has grown dramatically in the past ten years, and the trend shows no end. According to individual pipers there were very few bagpipe bands in New Hampshire and none that represented Firefighters. Therefore, in the tradition of honoring fallen colleagues it was no surprise that in 1995 a group of interested firefighters from throughout New Hampshire meet and began the formulation of what is currently called The Professional Firefighters of New Hampshire Pipes & Drums .The group, many of whom were taking lessons with pipe instructors and others with drum instructors began outlining how the band would function. Music was chosen to play, uniforms were decided upon, but how to pay for them remained. The individual pipers who were ready to play in public did so and were paid for their performances and allowed them to cover some of the expenses. As word spread of a firefighters pipe band organizing others in the firefighting community began seeking out instructors to learn either the pipes or drums. Currently, the band has about 25 active members and several in training for both the pipes and drums. Additionally, we maintain a number of members that are color guard members. These members carry the colors and banner for the band in parades and events we perform at. Since the bands inception in 1995, it has performed at numerous parades throughout New England, Firefighter Memorials in New Hampshire, Line of duty deaths in NH,MASS,Maine & Vermont, National Democratic Convention in Boston, IAFF Fallen Firefighter Memorial in Colorado Springs, Colorado {2005,2006,2007} and other individual performance that enhance our visibility. The band takes great pride in representing the firefighters of New Hampshire.
